When struggling with depression, having a solid support system can be essential. That being said, the relationships of those struggling with depression are often put under serious pressure, especially when the symptoms of depression rear up.

For some struggling with depression, it can become hard to understand why someone would want to be in a relationship with you – you may lash out or withdraw, which can further stress the relationship. Despite this, it is possible to keep a healthy relationship when all parties are committed to working through the depression together.

Honesty is one of the most important factors in leading a healthy relationship while one of the parties is facing depression. It is important to be open about depression and how it is affecting you, even if that can feel daunting. Honesty helps your loved ones to understand you and support you when times get tough.

Communication is also incredibly important in working through depression within a relationship. Being able to talk and express your feelings comfortably helps to feel process your feelings and have your needs met in a safe place.

When feeling depressed, it is important that you have a strong sense of support from your partner. Additionally, connecting with other people in a similar situation can be enlightening and helpful towards your own situation. It is important also to remember that healthy relationships are partnerships – and should have a united front. Negotiating mental health issues can be complicated, so your partner might not understand everything right from the beginning, but as long as they are committed to providing support and negotiating it together, you will get through it together.

When a relationship – either romantic or not – involves one or more people who struggle with depression, it can be a difficult path to negotiate together. However, with honesty and proper communication, the partnership can make it through together and come out better on the other end.
